A
press release from the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada
Reno,
Nev. (December 8, 2005) - Target2010, Northern Nevada’s New Economy,
is a regional economic planning process that the Economic Development
Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) and a group of private, public and
education entities announced today. Target2010 is a community-wide process
to help shape future business growth and ensure northern Nevada can sustain
a diverse economy and high quality of life 10 to 20-plus years from now.
Businesses and residents are asked to give input to the project by taking
a brief survey at www.Target2010.org.
The
announcement of a regional economic plan comes as northern Nevada faces
record population growth and development. According to a national consultant
hired to lead the planning process, northern Nevada will strengthen its
already strong economy by targeting key industries and workers that the
region is best suited to serve.
“Northern Nevada has earned a reputation as a top place to do business
in America, but it’s how the region sustains that growth and maintains
its desirable quality of life that will ensure a prosperous future,”
said Angelos Angelou, principal of AngelouEconomics, an economic development
consulting firm based in Austin, Texas. “Target2010 is a crucial
step towards positively impacting the region by generating high wage jobs
and reducing the gap between income and cost of living.”
Over the past five years EDAWN and its partners have diversified the economy
by generating nearly $1 billion in economic impact and thousands of new
jobs in northern Nevada. Target2010 will elevate the region’s economy
and quality of life by targeting industries that bring in high paying
jobs and opportunities while EDAWN continues its business recruitment
and expansion efforts. The project will also cultivate startup companies
and entrepreneurship through collaboration with the University of Nevada,
Reno, community colleges and the Washoe County School District.
“Target2010 is about being stewards for our community and its resources,
and ensuring northern Nevada continues to be a place we want to do business
and raise our families,” said Chuck Alvey, president/CEO of EDAWN.
“It’s exciting to take action today that will provide promising
job opportunities for our high school and college graduates when they
enter the workforce and help keep young talent here.”
AngelouEconomics will oversee the project over the next six months and
is asking for community input. Businesses and residents can visit the
project website, www.Target2010.org to take a survey and provide feedback.
The project website will be updated throughout the project and the public
is encouraged to stay informed about its progress by visiting www.Target2010.org.
