Regional Highlight: Detroit Region Aerotropolis in Southeast Michigan

In 2008, AngelouEconomics worked with the Detroit Renaissance Foundation, Wayne and Washtenaw Counties, several local communities, and leading business executives in Southeast Michigan to develop a Business Attraction Strategy for the Detroit Region Aerotropolis.  The vision of the Aerotropolis is to create economic vitality by building on Detroit’s significant airport capacity and logistical advantages.  Home to two large airports, including Detroit Metro and Willow Run Cargo Airport, an excellent highway network, access to deep water ports and rail connectivity the Detroit Aerotropolis Region provides companies with significant assets as a mobility hub.

Since completion of the project, the Detroit Region Aerotropolis has worked to form the Aerotropolis Development Corporation (ADC) to drive future business attraction efforts. To date six governments have officially joined, and pledged funding to, the ADC including Washtenaw County, Taylor, Belleville, Ypsilanti Township, the City of Ypsilanti and Van Buren Township.

Once all communities have committed, they will jointly petition the state legislature for a package of bills to authorize the ADC to issue incentives to attract new businesses to the aerotropolis zone — about 60,000 acres of land in Wayne and Washtenaw counties between Detroit Metro and Willow Run Airport.

New Projects at AE

AngelouEconomics is pleased to announce one of several new projects:

City of Moraine, Ohio
AngelouEconomics has been retained by the City of Moraine, Ohio to develop a comprehensive economic development plan. An inner ring suburb of the Dayton MSA with a once rich history in the automotive industry, Moraine has lost over 8,000 jobs in the past five years, leading to a declining business base, increased unemployment and several vacant/abandoned facilities. City leaders seek to create and
implement a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy to:

  • Facilitate a unified vision guiding economic growth for the City and region
  • Strengthen the capacity of area education and workforce systems to meet target industry demands
  • Build a redevelopment plan for the recently closed GM site
  • Identify specific short term strategies that lay out steps to attract, retain and expand high growth industries
  • Develop longer-term strategies to create sustainable high-wage jobs in a mix of profitable industry sectors that leverage Moraine’s current set of assets

For more information about the City of Moraine, please click here.
